Cameron Visit to Turkey

Support continues with the momentum for Turkey to become a member of the EU, with widespread support show recently by David Cameron’s recent visit and the majority of EU members now urging a push to receive Turkey as a new member. It is thought the prospect is becoming a real possibility for membership sooner rather than later and the effect could have both positive and negative aspects for present member countries and Turkey itself. The positive for the EU is a securing of vital oil and gas supplies which 70% of Europe’s supplies are brought through Turkey. The negative is the expected large influx of Turkish nationals which will aim to travel to other member countries seeking employment. For Turkey itself the membership benefits will increase its trading and high export options and an expected increase in living standards generally, a down side for Turkey will be the inevitable increase in property prices but the flip side is a huge plus for existing foreigners who already own property who will reap the rewards.

Still unknown but the previous estimates of 10 years or more before membership is now thought to be a very pessimistic time scale and a more realistic one could be less than 5 years or even less.
